13 Jobs We Love to Hate but Can’t Live Without

Unfortunately, some jobs get a lot of judgment. However, most of these jobs are very important!

Living without AC, tech support, electricity, or groceries is hard. Every job has its purpose, yet there are careers people love to hate but can’t live without.

What follows is a list of careers with bad reputations. However, these are also jobs we need to function and live in society.

Are any jobs on this list the ones you love to hate? Do you agree that we are better off not having people do these jobs?

Maintenance Workers

Maintenance workers make the world go round. They are jacks of all trades who work in office buildings, apartments, condos, and more. Unfortunately, many people don’t give them enough credit.

No one wants to unclog their own toilet or prepare apartments. Maintenance workers repair and maintain buildings.

Construction Workers

We need construction work, yet some judge it harshly. Being a construction worker isn’t easy; it is physically and mentally exhausting.

And there is a huge shortage! According to a CNBC article, the construction industry is short of 650,000 workers. This changes month by month depending on open jobs. People look down on construction, but without construction workers, we wouldn’t have any buildings!

It Specialists

IT specialists get yelled at a lot. Think about how many people you know in your life that struggle with technology. Who do they call when their laptop or computer isn’t working? An IT specialist.

IT specialists deserve more recognition. Without them, we’d remain suffering all sorts of digital problems.

Customer Support

There is something so frustrating about being put on hold for minutes or even hours while trying to solve a problem. I hate calling customer support services, but sometimes it’s necessary.

Just remember, it’s not the employee’s fault. They aren’t the ones who make the rules, but it’s so easy to take your frustration out on them. One of the main reasons people leave customer support and service jobs is how customers treat them, leading to burnout.

Janitors

Honestly, janitors also make the world go round, yet they have a bad reputation. Some people look down on janitors because of their non-glamorous jobs. But janitorial work is steady, pays decently, and is everywhere.

Janitors work in residential buildings, offices, museums, parks, and more. Some even work nights to make sure a building or area is clean before opening!

Teachers

Teachers are underpaid and overworked but also irreplaceable. They deal with changing education standards and a long list of students, parents, and staff.

Sadly, not everyone respects teachers. Some people love to hate this profession, but it’s tough work. Teachers work hard every day in the classroom, and yet, on average, they only make $69,544. The starting wage is even lower at $44,530.

Nurses

Nurses also get yelled at a lot. Although some people hate this profession, we need nurses. I don’t understand how someone could vent their frustration on a nurse.

They are nurturing, kind, and often more knowledgeable than doctors. In hospitals, we spend more time with nurses than doctors.

Chefs/Cooks

I’ve worked multiple years in the restaurant industry around so many different cooks and chefs. They receive a lot of complaints they don’t deserve. So many people complain about the wait time and want to talk to the cooks, but they can’t cook any faster.

Cooking is a science and a talent. If they don’t do it right, you could get sick. Respect cooks or stay home and make your own dinner.

Restaurant Workers

I can’t mention cooks without also including restaurant workers. If you like going out to eat, then you need restaurant workers. They are hosts, servers, bartenders, baristas, dishwashers, and more.

Restaurant workers are on their feet for hours, constantly smiling and taking orders. And yet, they get yelled at for small mistakes and miscommunication. Interestingly, in 2022, the quick service 90-day job retention rate was 54%.

Retail Workers

I don’t envy retail workers. Most retail workers don’t get paid enough or have benefits. And yet, we need retail workers! Without retail workers, we can’t just walk into our favorite stores and shop.

Some people argue that retail work is easy and only for young adults. However, the average age of a retail store worker is 35.8. This job needs to be respected! Retail employees work in important places like gas stations, grocery stores, and pharmacies.

Flight Attendants

Flight attendants are super important. They aren’t just on a plane to provide snacks and comfort. Flight attendants are trained in safety. They know what to do during accidents, although rare.

Flying without flight attendants isn’t an option, yet some people sneer or look down on this job. Thankfully, flight attendants make good money and have incredible benefits. According to Indeed, flight attendants earn an average of $27.39 an hour.

Housekeepers

One of my family members worked as a housekeeper for over a decade. She took pride in her work and maintained the cleanliness of hotel rooms and the lobby. Sadly, while working in tourism, she experienced rudeness and awful stares.

But where would we be without housekeepers? Who doesn’t want a clean room and a smiling face? Housekeeping is not easy either. It’s backbreaking work.

Trade Workers (HVAC Tech, Electrician, Plumber, Welder, Etc.)

Last but not least are trade workers. My husband works in the trades and sees a lot of judgment from people. But for what reason? For the most part, people in the trades make good money.

It isn’t the most glamorous or clean job, but it is 09respectable. Do you want a working bathroom? What about a cool AC on a hot summer day? Then you need trade workers.

16 Effective Techniques for Managing Work Stress

United States workers are experiencing record levels of workplace stress, and the American Institute of Stress (AIS) outlines the impact on workers’ wellness in a recent ComPsych survey. The outlook isn’t good — 62% of workers cited tensions due to a lack of autonomy or extreme tiredness. Moreover, work priorities are taking over citizens’ lives, with the sources of anxiety stemming from workload, coworkers, and performance improvements.

Truthfully, almost all the best high-paying jobs no one wants to work are blue-collar jobs. Working in the trades can sound intimidating, but it comes with great benefits, high pay, and job security.

Despite the pros, not a lot of people turn to the trades. If you’re feeling stuck, you may want to consider one of these high-paying jobs.

To curate this list, we chose jobs where you could earn at least $25 an hour. These jobs are also high in demand. To find out how in demand, we used Indeed and ZipRecruiter.

Here are 15 high-paying jobs that nobody wants.
