Step Into Creatureville: Willow Foster-Thorpe’s Unique Creatures Series Champions Empathy, Inclusion, and Imagination
Step into Creatureville… a world where magic meets meaning, where every animal has a voice, and where every difference becomes a superpower. This imaginative universe, created by UK children’s author Willow Foster-Thorpe, is reshaping the way families and educators talk to children about disabilities, emotions, and diversity.
The Unique Creatures series is not just a set of children’s books; it is a movement. Each story is carefully designed to combine whimsical adventures with heartfelt lessons, empowering children to see differences not as obstacles but as bridges to understanding and connection. Through playful characters, vibrant illustrations, and gentle humor, Foster-Thorpe brings inclusion to the forefront of children’s literature.
A Mission Rooted in Compassion
Willow Foster-Thorpe, an emerging voice in UK children’s literature, has made it her mission to create stories that inspire empathy, curiosity, and joy. With a background in advocacy and personal experience with disabilities, her storytelling is deeply authentic. Each book in the Unique Creatures series is both entertaining and educational, offering families a way to start meaningful conversations about challenges many children face.
As Foster-Thorpe herself puts it, these are more than books; they are “tools for change.” Her goal is to help children and adults alike celebrate differences and develop resilience in the face of adversity.
Felix the Frog: Understanding Deafness
The adventure begins with Understanding Deafness with Felix the Frog (2022). Felix is no ordinary frog: he is playful, curious, and communicates using Makaton, a form of sign language. When Felix and his friend Rupert the Snail visit the library, a stern ladybird librarian insists on silence. But for Felix, who sometimes speaks loudly without realizing it, staying quiet isn’t always easy.
The story captures both the challenges and joys of living with deafness. Parents and educators have praised the book as “friendly reading” and “very helpful” for children in inclusive classrooms. By giving Felix a voice, one expressed through Makaton, Foster-Thorpe encourages children to embrace new ways of communicating and connecting. Felix’s courage proves that being different is not a barrier, but a bridge.
Rupert the Snail: Understanding Autism
Next in the series comes Understanding Autism with Rupert the Snail (2023). Rupert lives in a baked bean tin, a cozy and imaginative home that reflects his unique perspective on the world. On a train trip to visit his cousins Betty and Stanley, Rupert encounters situations that mirror the lived experiences of children with autism.
Through playful interactions at the park, readers see both the misunderstandings and the joys that come with neurodiversity. The book’s strength lies in its warmth, humor, and honesty, presenting autism in a way that is accessible and uplifting. Reviewers have called the story “charming and insightful,” praising its ability to show that patience, kindness, and acceptance make every child’s world worth celebrating.
Wilhelmina the Glow-Worm: Understanding Anxiety
The third installment, Understanding Anxiety with Wilhelmina the Glow-Worm (2024), introduces readers to Wilhelmina, or Mina, a 93-year-old glow-worm who lives in Creature Cottage, a cozy care home for elderly animals. Mina is constantly worried, but with the support of her friends, she learns strategies to cope with her anxiety.
This story gently introduces children to mindfulness, resilience, and positive routines. It reassures them that feeling anxious is normal and that courage often begins with community and love. Educators and parents have praised the book for giving children practical tools for managing emotions, while still being an engaging tale full of character and charm.
A World That Inspires Change
At its core, the Unique Creatures series is about building empathy and imagination. Each book invites readers to step into the shoes, or shells, or wings of characters who navigate the world differently. By doing so, children learn that differences should be celebrated, not feared.
Foster-Thorpe’s work has already made a positive impact on families, educators, and special needs communities across the UK and beyond. Her books are available worldwide through Amazon, with growing recognition for their role in fostering inclusive, compassionate learning environments.
Meet the Author
Willow Foster-Thorpe is a UK-based children’s author and advocate for children with disabilities.
Willow Foster-Thorpe’s stories are about animals with different disabilities living together in a village called Creatureville. What inspired Willow to write her short stories was that she herself has a disability and when she was at school there weren’t any books about disabilities. So she is hoping that her stories will help, inspire and educate children and adults with learning disabilities and their families too, so that they do not feel that they are the only ones with that disability and to help them understand that there are others going through the same struggles as themselves but in a fun, humorous way.
Through her Unique Creatures series, she empowers young readers to embrace differences, understand emotions, and engage with the world through creativity and compassion.
Her books are available at https://unquecreatures.uk/books/ and via Amazon UK.
